Why did you choose your profession?
Two childhood memories come to mind: my grandfather's workshop and our very first computer. I've always been interested how tools and technology help us get things done. It helped push me towards a college degree that brought together the real-world needs taught in business classes and the amazing advances in computer science. I have also come to appreciate how important the human factor is. Whether it is driving profitability, managing change, or creating a new product how you treat and interact with people is an important part of your shared success.
Who are your main influences?
We moved around quite a bit when I was growing up, so I had the privilege of having a few different piano teachers. They had different styles, but they all had expectations they wanted met. They installed in me a love of music and that the work involved in sharing it with others is its own reward – even if you aren't a virtuoso.
Professionally I have been influenced by leaders who approach their role with determination, respect, and humility. Former CEO of Cargill Greg Page comes to mind but there are many others. I never knew how important managing risk would be until I spent time listening to those who have faced it knowing they weren't fully prepared but were still determined to see it through.
What is your greatest accomplishment?
Overcoming my fear of failure before beginning any new role – including starting my own software business.
What tools do you use?
Vim, Clojure, AWS, Excel, Parliamentary Procedure, Claude Code
What advice would you give to someone just starting out in your profession?
Treat risk like cash, spend it wisely.
It is fine to pick a platform, and leverage it as best you can, but never lose sight of the architectural layers involved – vendor risk is real.
They say your technology architecture will mirror your organization's culture (and org chart). While I think that rings true, remember that part of being a professional is knowing how to communicate the value of technology choices that aren't obvious at first glance.
